Iron Age, Impossible Choices

The crops have failed and your village is starving. The gods demand a sacrifice to restore the fields. You have been chosen… but you must be willing. You will be given four days to determine if you accept or not. Your fate lies in the black waters of the bog, but not yet. Use your remaining time to make final preparations, talk to loved ones, and consider your decision. The choice is yours.

Inspired by the Tollund Man of Denmark, Tollund is a 60-page solo journaling game about impossible choices in Iron Age Northern Europe.

It’s a journaling game, but one in which each decision pushes the scales one direction or the other. The final result is an accumulation of many tiny choices over time, rather than a singular decision.

A standard deck of playing cards and 13+ tokens are required to play.

Content Warning & Player Safety

Tollund explores mature themes inspired by Iron Age history involving death, grief, starvation, loss, animal violence, and ritual human sacrifice.

Very easy to play and engaging

Very easy to play and engaging. I’m sure it will get to be more fun with subsequent plays, but it was a little dark and dry my first time through. Nonetheless, very happy I got this game. I recommend it for the price.

Goodbye Danish sky

This was my first time playing a solo game, but the system and prompts were very easy to use. It was an enjoyable roleplaying experience, and depending on the length of your journaling/prompt responses, could be a one-shot afternoon or take several sessions as you weigh your choice. Will definitely try other games from Exuent Press if they are like this!
