All Night Breakfast at the Midnight Owl
At a Glance
All Night Breakfast at The Midnight Owl, is a solo role-playing game in which you are the creator and host of a supernatural investigation podcast. You have recently left the place you call home and moved to a sleepy and isolated town to investigate a number of strange occurrences in the hope of finding content for your podcast.
Your adventures play out through visiting locations in and around the town, collecting clues and evidence and keeping a journal. Optional podcast and map creation elements are also available if you wish to dive deeper into the world they create within the game.
The narrative involves themes of the supernatural, secrets and lies, and what it feels like to be an outsider in a tight-knit community. The setting of the game is inspired by the Pacific Northwest region of the USA, but can be adapted to take place in any part of the world. The general vibe is akin to shows like Twin Peaks, The X-Files and True Detective, though it doesn’t assume you are familiar with these shows.
If you have never played a journaling game before, it’s worth noting that there is no right or wrong way to tell your story. It can be a simple as bullet points on a sheet of paper, long form prose with sketches, or anything in between. You can also use digital apps to record your story. The main aim behind this game is that it inspires you to be creative.
34 page, 5.8 x 8.3 inch, full color, saddle-bound zine

This is a journaling game with very clear instructions and a great premise. I think it is a great idea to use a 24-hour diner as your 'office' while working on your podcast. It is also great to see so many useful random tables and a half-page list of inspiration sources.
This was my first time with a solo game and I was a bit confused at first but once I figured it out I started having a blast. It's got this solo reporter, mystery vibe. The game has three acts to it. Most of the game play takes place during the second act, where you dive into the investigation, finding clues and exploring.
What made this enjoyable to me was that all of the clues and locations became jumping off points for me. If you like creative writing, you can use the prompts and events to flush out a full story. It's like becoming a writer for Twin Peaks
The ability to replay the game over and over again is nice too since the events rely on drawing cards and rolling dice. Each game would be different.
Things that I had with me that really brought out the best of the game were a notebook to keep track of stats, story points, and other pertinent information, a deck of cards, and some polyhedral dice. Although, I downloaded some apps for the last two.
I had a really fun time with my first "session" with this solo TTRPG. It became a really fun journaling/drawing project, slightly deviating from the idea given in the book of recording a podcast, but still a perfectly reasonable way to play the game and have a good time with it!
My one grievance with it is that there's no real 'endgame.' There's a way to calculate 'listeners' but it doesn't really give any rules or indications of any sort of endgame for any investigation. I think that's due to the nature of it being something you continue with the same character and world for multiple investigations, but it can make it a little tricky to figure out exactly when you should end an investigation and what really happens when you do.
Other than that, it's a really great time, highly recommend!
I felt like this was a good intro to the world of solo TTRPGs. It was easy to get into as a beginner, but I feel like you could make it as complex as you want.
All Night Breakfast masterfully walks the line of strange and supernatural. A very simple system allows for storytelling advancements and the tables included present interesting pieces of information to fold into the plot. I felt like I could seamlessly move through my investigation with the game’s input and assistance to deliver a compelling story. Highly recommended!
